The Costa Tropical

End of Feb

I hate to see the year fly by but at last we are at the end of February and the weather has changed at last from continuous rain to relatively pleasant and even hot with temperatures in the twenties!

This is just as well as many towns along the coast of Andalucia as well as inland will be celebrating Dia de Andalucia tommorrow, this often involves a number of outdoor activities, shows and concerts and also some towns go all out and cook a large paella (several infact) for everyone who wants to attend. Don’t expect many of the shops to be open on Monday! This is a good opportunity (weather still permitting) to get out and see the local celebrations.

One unfortunate incident in the month was the untimely death of an English couple who live along the coast in La Mamola who were crushed by the roof of a friends property that they stopped by to have a chat with. Wrong place at the wrong time. Apparantly the collapse was as a result of all the recent rain.

As statistics are tallied at the end of the month no doubt some records will have been broken in regards to the amount of rainfall so far this year.

The Spanish can be quite stubborn to adapt to changing environments and what is acceptable – take for instance the smoking ban – when at the regional head quarters of the National Police the other day one of the policemen was smoking in the building – you still expect to see it (although illegal) in many bars but even the police ignore the law. In a related type of story a Spanish MP responsible for road safety has been found drunk at the wheel after crashing his car!
