Salobrena Old Town
In Salobrena there are many things to do if you want to take a break from the beaches or your pool of your rental villa or apartment. Apart from the beach area the old town is situated on the side of the rock where the castle is built. Here traditional white Andalucian town houses cascade down the steep hillside. As you walk around these narrow streets which wind up and along the hillside there are a few ruins of properties which have not been occupied for decades where you can peer between the bars of the windows to see how basic the conditions must have been fifty or sixty years ago. There are also a few bars tucked away which provide a good excuse to stop and rest a while. Some like Bar Pesetas has a great view from its roof terrace.
Salobrena museum
The area of Salobrena has been occupied for more than 6000 years and a museum housed in the old townhall in the main square about half way up the hill provides some insight into the history and evolution of this area.
Salobrena Castle
It is impossible to give directions to arrive at Salobrena castle other that just keep heading up the hill and you will get there, it seems that all roads lead to the castle, if you do get lost just ask a local the word “castillo” (castle) should be sufficient for them to point you in the right direction. Do check at the tourist office before heading up the hill because if not you may arrive to find it closed! There is an entrance charge of about 5 euros to enter. From the castle there are excellent panoramic views from east to west including sea views and down to Salobrena’s beaches. There are also very good views inland to the Sierra Nevada.
El Gran Peñon
Previously this rock which jutts out to sea was an island which has been previously used as a prison and a burial ground. Now no longer used it provides the location for a local restaurant and a promontory for visitors to obtain excellent views along the coast and back towards Salobrena’s castle.
La Caleta
Located a short walk along the beach or through sugarcane lined paths which wind through the agricultural land next to the beach La Caleta is a small Spanish fishing village which formed an importanr part in the local economy until recently as it is home of the (recently retired) last sugar cane processing factory in Europe. This factory is housed in a large old building just a few meters from the sea. Close by there are two small Spanish bars should you wish to have some refreshments while there.
In addition don’t forget to visit Almunecar and La Herradura. Our page Costa Tropical Information has a list of other places to visit such as Nerja, Alpujarras and Granada.
