Salobrena Nightlife

The nightlife in Salobrena is consistent with what you find during the rest of the day in Salobrena in that it would be best described as “typically Spanish”. There are plenty of bars and restaurants of different standards throughout the town and in the summer the area along the beach promenade is particularly busy. There are the occasional discos (describing them as “nightclubs” would give the wrong impression) but everything appears more family oriented and despite the fact that alcohol is cheap you do not find drunkeness, aggression or the larger lout/binge drinking mentality here. The most popular discos in summer tend to be along the beach where the chiringuitos are converted at night to provide music, drinking and dancing.

At bars despite the fact that a beer should not cost more than a euro (in 2008) it is still traditional to receive a small food item to eat with your drink and the more you order the more food keeps coming. These “tapas” are particularly substantial in certain bars and restaurants in Motril.

Most restaurants stick to what they know best which is Spanish cuisine with an emphasis, particularly near the beach, on seafood including sea bass, sardines grilled outdoors and baby squid. From time to time restaurants have flamenco nights but the best known and consistent location to find Flamenco shows is just outside of Almunecar at LUCIANO.

The nightlife for younger people does not really begin until somewhere between midnight and one at night and goes on until about six or seven in the morning. Restaurants tend to open at about eight but do not get busy until about nine in the evening which is quite normal in Spanish society.

At night once the restaurants start emptying the main promenade (Paseo Maritimo)nalong the beach from where you can look along the coast and watch the reflection of the coastal lights in the sea becomes busy in the summer months swells with hundreds of Spanish going out for a stroll, something to drink or an ice cream in the warm summer air.

There are a number of festivals and fiestas throughout the year. In June, there is the festival of San Juan and the town also celebrates a week long festival with concerts and fairground attractions which go on late into the night – or morning, at night during the summer there are also special medieval feasts held within the castle that dominates Salobrena.
