Salobrena Beaches
Salobrena has about 8 kilometers of coastline of which about half are beaches as beyond the small fishing village of La Caleta to the west of Salobrena there are steep cliffs and the water’s edge is usually rocky and impossible to access although there are a few bays, which are well hidden.
In general the Salobrena beaches are relatively uncrowded, even in the middle of summer, compared to many of the other Mediterranean holiday destinations. The beaches vary from pepples in the west to sand (albeit often coarse) further east.
La Guardia Beach
Between La Caleta and Salobrena is the beach of La Guardia which stretches until the the Gran Peñon which sticks out into the sea, forming a natural breakwater and dividing the beaches. At each end of the La Guardia beach there are restaurants the most popular being La Bahia and restaurant El Peñon, there is also a small bar and club on the beach. Even in summer you can find large spaces unoccupied on this beach.
El Peñon Beach
Directly infront of the main beach entrance from the town is the most popular beach in Salobrena El Peñpn, the sand is slightly finer here but the main attraction is that directly adjacent to the beach are various restaurants and bars and on the beach for those to lazy to go the extra fifteen meters there are beach bars for refreshments and lunch. In recent years there have been sun shades and loungers which you can hire for the day.
La Charca
As you move along the beach you arrive at La Charca beach, there are still beach bar/restaurants at regular intervals but not such a good selection of restaurants as you walk further east. There are also loungers with shades which may be hired along this part of the beach.
Punta del Rio
The final stretch of beach in Salobrena is Punta del Rio which borders the river Rio Guadalafeo which carries water from the Sierra Nevada mountains to the coast.
The other side of the river are the beaches of Motril which are not easily accessible from Salobrena, however, the first stretch of coastline has wide unspoilt beaches and is almost completely deserted even in the middle of summer.
Inland from all these beaches the ground is very flat. Along the length of the La Guardia beach there is mainly tall sugarcane, and this is repeated again along the first beach in Motril beyond Punta del Rio. Between El Peñoñ and Punta del Rio there are low rise apartment buildings.
