Motril Nightlife

Motril being a working town and not dependent on the tourist seasons has a lively nightlife throughout the year with bars, restaurants and clubs staying open till the small hours. But don’t expect the sort of establishments in the areas which market themselves to hoards of foreign tourists – the nightlife here is distinctly Spanish. Although Motril is typically Spanish it is no longer traditionally Spanish and flamenco is now no longer as popular as twenty years ago the music in the bars and clubs does tend to be focused on Spanish rock and dance music with a strong influence of latin music in some of the venues.

Throughout the year you can tour tapas bars until well after midnight, often enjoying a free “tapa” with every drink and this is as popular with the local Spanish and visitors alike. The custom originates from the habit of covering drinks bread to keep off flies but now extends to small dishes of meat stew with potatos, squid and various other typical local foods. The tradition has died out in the resorts which cater more to foreigners where drink prices are higher and you don’t get anything without paying for it!

In the summer the nightlife in Motril is split between the town and the beach bars which provide an excellent location to go for a drink on the warm summer evenings. There is a promenade along Playa Poniente but most of the beach bars are like islands surrounded by sand a few meters on to the beach itself. Here the crowds tend to be younger – particularly after midnight when music and dancing become the priority after a hard day relaxing on the beach.

There are also on occasions concerts by international performers such as Ricky Martin and in August during the town’s annual fair, which can be seen from some distance away with bright lights and a variety of rides and attractions – not to mention the music and noise, attracts many people from the town.
