Around Motril and to the east of Motril in the various small and very Spanish seaside towns such as Torrenueva, Calahonda, Castel del Ferro and Carchuna holiday villa rentals are harder to find as this area has not experienced the sought of developments with villas which are found the other side of Motril.

Many of the detached properties in these areas are more likely to be considered “cortijos” or “fincas” which are rustic properties which were often originally homes to the local Spanish smallholders who had an acre or two to grow their own crops or have been based on similar designs which are often quite basic rather than purpose designed holiday and vacation villas.

The quality of these cortijos can vary enormously to humble small and basic to large luxurious properties which can easily compare to many of the villas along the coast. Many of the cortijos fall somewhere in the middle.

In the area directly around Motril many of the villas and larger detached properties are homes to the local Spanish who work in the town with a few now being owned by foreigners there has been an increase in recent years of cortijos in Motril for rent.

Beyond Motril the other two areas along the Costa Tropical where you are more likely to find villas or cortijos for rent is Calahonda and Castel del Ferro but many of the cortijos here are still owned by Spanish families who tend to use the properties in the peak summer months and not rent them in the other months of the year.
