La Herradura Beaches

Unlike the other towns on the Costa Tropical La Herradura has a smaller number of beaches but to its advantage it does have two of the nicest beaches along the Costa Tropical as well as one of the prettiest bays along the south coast of Spain.

La Herradura beach
For the Spanish visitors and locals the town is synonymos with the bay and beach which form a horse shoe shape. Along the bay below the old town runs a 2km beach which is well maintained and looked after throughout the year but deserted most of the time despite average day time temperatures rarely dropping below 20 Celcius and on average 320 days of sunshine on the Costa Tropical. The beach is mainly a fine grey sand and has various well place beach bars and restaurants along its length. The beach has recently been improved and made a little bit smarter. Gone is the wooden pier which once caused much controversy and along the beach groups of palm trees have been added. There are also showers to wash the salt from your body and sand from your feet. It is a popular beach to practice both scuba diving, windsurfing and other watersports.

Cantarrijan Beach La Herradura
A beautiful beach with clear blue and turquoise water which epitomises what many imagine a beach in Spain or even the tropics should look like. Set in a natural location of great beauty below the area of Cerro Gordo the Cantarrijan Beach is the last beach in Granada, and is on the border with the province of Malaga. Found just off the old coastal road (N340) from La Herradura to Nerja the Cantarrijan beach is about 400m long and has a pair of restaurants and a good parking reached after driving down a winding road which has recently been improved and asphalted helping to add to its popularity. The beach has two zones the zone to the east is a popular naturist zone and the western area is for those who want to use their swimming suits.

Calaiza Beach La Herradura
Although not remote the small coves which are difficult to find and with access not being easy the beach feel as if it is ery isolated, and is rarely visited by tourists. The coves which make up the sries of small beaches are accessed along a small path that leads from the developed area of La Herradura and passes along close to the sea. The waters here are popular with divers, who use a small boat to get here. If the water is at all rough it probably is not worth the effort! Also make sure you bring some water and possibly something to eat as there are no restaurants here.
