The Bay of La Herradura is particularly pretty having blue and turquoise waters and high cliffs and headlands at each end with the slightly curved beach joining them in the middle forming a horseshoe shape. To the East is the exclusive hillside of Punta de la Mona from where you access the popular yachting harbour of Marina del Este and to the west of the town is the new development of Carmenes del Mar which leads up the hillside to the established neighbourhood of Cerro Gordo and protected parkland. Between these two promontories the town of La Herradura sits in this quiet and protected valley between the coastal road and the sea.

Along the coastal promenade of La Herradura there are also various shops and diving centres where you can rent water sports equipment as well as official camping.

Above the coastal road there are other small well established residential areas including San Nicholas and San Antonio which are set a little way back from the town in the hills and where you can find various nice family villas in mature and established settings and designed in a Spanish pueblo style. Other smaller developments overlooking La Herradura have a mixture of villas, town houses and apartments and include Las Palomas to the west and the larger modern development of Carmenes del Mar.

La Herradura is technically a part of the municipal area of Almunecar, however, it is quite distinct and there are several key areas around La Herradura which offer good holiday rental accommodation on the Costa Tropical.
