Almunecar has a rich history and was known as “Sexi” in Roman times. Throughout the town there are various Roman ruins which can be seen while walking through the streets.
Fish Salting Factory
Sitting below the castle of San Miguel there are the excavated remains of a Roman fish salting factory (El Majuelo) dating to the 4th Centuary BC when it was first established by Phoenicians.
Roman Aqueduct
Built to bring fresh water into the town for use in the fish factory there is evidence of this ancient structure both in the town and on the road to Suspiro del Moro, in the Rio Verde and Rio Seco. Parts of this ancient structure built in the 1st Centuary BC are still in use for irrigation of the crops.
Cave of the Seven Palaces
Now the local archaeological museum these domed rooms date back to the 1st Centuary AD.
Roman Bridge in Cotobro
Still in good condition it was an important link in the efficient movement of goods along the coast.
San Miguel Castle
Built high in a strategic location overlooking the town the foundations date back to Roman and Phoenicina times. The current structure dates to Moorish times when it was a palace for the Nasrid dynasty in the 13h Centuary. Later left in ruins following bombardment by english troops it was used as a cemetary until the middle of the twentieth Centuary. Recently it has been somewhat restored.
Peñon del Santo
A large natural rock with a cross at its highest point which was erected in 1900. This large rock separates the beaches of San Cristobal and La Caletilla.
Park Manujelo
Briefly mentioned above as the location of the fish salting factory, this park has many species of tropical plants, palms and trees.
19th Centuary Palacete de la Najarra
A Neo-Arabic style building close to Hotel Almunecar Playa. Now housing the main tourist office this distinctive pink building has beautiful gardens and interior walls decorated with interesting murals.
Bird Park Sexi Loro
For a small admission fee you can wander around this bird park below the Castle and see tropical birds the most striking being the parrots as well as the peakocks.
Almunecar Aquarium
A recent addition to the town this modern underground aquarium opened in 2008. There are about 200 species of fish in 18 different tanks, which you can pass through while watching the fish around you using a glass tunnel. Although not big it is the largest in Andalucia. Located in Plaza Kuwait.
Peña Escrita Nature Park
Located high in the hills behind Almunecar (about a 40 minute drive) Peña Escrita is a complex ideal for nature lovers and those keen on sports tourism. Some of the more exotic animals include hippos, monkeys and kangaroos. If going on foot is not appealling you can also experience it from the air by para gliding or on mountain bikes!
