Almunecar has almost twenty kilometers of coastline, including La Herradura, however, not all of the coastline has beaches as steep hillsides plunge directly into the sea at various points. There are as a result some pretty, private coves and beaches which you can enjoy if you do not wish to go to the main beaches nearer the town, however, these beaches do not have lifeguards or medical assistance close by.
The quality of the beaches does vary and the beaches can be shingle or light grey coloured sand which can be quite coarse in some spots. Although the Costa Tropical beaches do not have golden sands but they do have more sàce and a natural beauty not found on the manufactured beaches of some of the better know tourist destinations in Spain, who import the sand!
Travelling from the west of Almunecar near Cotobro towards the town some of the beaches are:
Playa El Muerto
Discretely located just beyond the apartment buildings in Cotobro this is a naturist beach.
Playa El Cotobro
A good family beach, no beach bars on the beach but there are restaurants close by.
Playa de la Veintiuna
As well as serving nearby apartment buildings this beach is also popular with those participating in water sports and there is a dive center located here.
Playa San Cristobal This beach is infront of some of the larger hotels in the area. There are several beach restaurants and bars along its length. A popular family beach.
Playa La Caletilla
Begining at Peñon del Santo which separates this beach from Playa San Cristobal this beach is located infront of the cental shopping area of Almunecar and Paseo del Altillo. This is one of the most popular beaches in Almunecar and is family oriented with various bars, restaurants and ice-cream parlours overlooking it.
Playa Puerta del Mar, Playa Fuente de Piedra and Playa Velilla
These three beaches stretch along the promenade and are located infront of some of the larger apartment buildings in the town. Off-shore on days when there is a bit of wind there are often groups of enthusiasts participating in kite surfing.
Playa Tesorillo
A very pretty beach in a private sandy bay between two headlands. There are two bars/restaurants for food and refreshments. This beach tends to attract a younger crowd!
Playa Cabria
Someway outside of the town located near the large new hotel Playa Calida is Playa Cabria which is relatively quiet most of the year. There is a good Spanish restaurant here (which sometimes closes in the winter) but attracts people to the beach in the summer months.
