Lying on the coast south of Granada, Almunecar has been transformed into an appealing destination for tourists seeking to find something different from that offered further along the coast on the Costa del Sol. The emphasis here for visitorss on their Almunecar holidays is a more traditional Spanish experience as many of the summer tourists come from Spanish inland cities such as Granada, Jaen, Cordoba, Madrid and as far as the north coast of Spain who come to enjoy less oppressive temperatures in a natural setting which is combined with more exciting nightlife than the neighbouring towns of Salobrena and La Herradura and a diverse range of activities to participate in during the day in addition to its twenty or so beaches.

Almunecar is the largest of the three main holiday towns on the Costa Tropical and to many it is the prettiest, with extensive pedestrian areas in the heart of the old town where many boutiques and restaurants can be found and large gardens, parks and green areas scattered amoungst its buildings which are a mix of traditional white Andalucian townhouses, magestic old Spanish buildings and modern blocks of apartments.

The population of Almunecar is around 22,000 people many of whom still live in the central area both in apartments and the old town houses but in recent years the town center has begun to spread with the construction of new apartments and construction of new sports facilities and plans for a new modern commercial center. In summer there is a sharp rise as tourists arrive to begin their summer holidays in Almunecar.

To the west of the town center and on the outskirts of Almunecar there is the pleasant and quiet area of Cotobro which has its own stretch of beach as well as a nudist beach (which I believe is almost deserted most of the time!) in a private location just a little further west. In this area there is a mixture of villas and apartments, usually with the apartments in the best positions closest to the water. The center of the town is about two kilometers away and is a pleasant walk along the beachfront which is completely flat. As you move towards the center there are more apartment blocks and the occasional hotel which can reach about eight floors high.

Along the beachfront, below the promenade and at beach level directly infront of the central pedestrianised area of Almunecar a new development of smart restaurants and bars has recently been completed and which has also provided a large underground car park. The narrow pedestrian streets in summer provide some shade while looking in the shop windows and are often quite busy in the main summer months.

As you walk further east towards the areas of Velilla and Taramay there are large blocks of apartments sandwiched between a sheer rock face which has been cut away to allow room for this single line of apartment buildings. Also along this stretch there is AquaTropic a water park located on the shore as well as restaurants and numerous bars. On the hills above the apartments there are a mixture of modern townhouses and established villas.
