Costa Tropical – Still No Flu

Boarding panography
I have heard from owners of rental properties on the Costa Tropical that the possible spread of swine flu is making people hesitate before booking their holidays. Therefore I hope having an update as to what is going on here in Spain is useful when you are deciding what to do.

About a week after the initial panic there are now 15 confirmed cases of swine flu in Spain mainly centered around the Valencia and Cataluña regions – none on the Costa Tropical. This is slightly less than the UK which as of this date has reported 18 cases. Only one of the fifteen in Spain has caught the virus from another person in Spain – all the others had recently returned from Mexico. So far as we are aware none of the cases are causing serious concern at this time.

We know that the situation could deteriorate, needs to be monitored and it is necessary to take sensible precautions but at this time there appears no reason to change your holiday plans if you are thinking of having a holiday in Spain this year.  If at all concerned probably the best thing you could do is ensure that you have travel insurance which would cover the cancellation of your trip due to illness and pay for any medical costs if taken ill while abroad.  Directline do cheap insurance for less than 5 pounds a trip – Direct Line

Looking further afield a travel warning has been issued though by the EU Health Commission which has strongly advised against travelling to Mexico and certain areas of the USA unless absolutely necessary. As a result British some major British tour operators including Thomson and Thomas Cook have cancelled ALL flights to Mexico and customers are being offered alternative destinations – no doubt including Spain!

As mentioned above if travelling it is best to take sensible precautions and if you feel unwell prior to starting your holiday, particularly with a fever or other flu related symptoms it would be best to seek medical advice. As well as the usual strict security at the airports health measures have also been set up at all Spanish airports.

Hopefully this will just be another case of the media creating a sensation about something which ends up being less significant than originally reported.
