The Costa Tropical, Spain can be a bit of a suprise to some visitors, particularly those who have been to Spain many times before but without visiting this area. Our expectations are all influenced by our experiences together with what we are fed by television with its rich visuals and highly produced content. Therefore the image that many people have of coastal Spain apart from the glorious sunshine is either of over (and illegal) development, stag parties or all you can eat English breakfasts.
As a result Spain and the Costas have become a bit of a cliche in recent years with progammes such as “Benidorm” highlighting a side of Spain that many can relate to but do not always aspire to. Without doubt particuarly among the very rich Spain has lost some of its charm as mass tourism has taken over it has transformed much of the coastline. In doing so it has made many Spaniards richer but it has not all been positive. Instead of arriving in holiday destinations which are typically Spanish many holiday makers in Spain are surrounded by acres of development, which in some cases is starting to look a little dated.
In comparison to the Costa Tropical, Spain, particularly along the Costas has indeed been overdeveloped and many vistors to the area south of Granada where the Costa Tropical is located find this area to be refreshingly Spanish. One of the remaining Spanish traditions that is still common here is the practice of providing “tapas” – little plates of food when you order a beer or any other beverage. These small treats are not charged for and will continue to come as you order each successive round of drinks. However, even without this often commented on tradition which used to be common throughout Andalusia but has almost died out on the coast the Costa Tropical is unlike many of the other popular areas easily identified as being Spanish rather than a sunny holiday resort. The old towns along the Costa Tropical still form the heart of the areas and they are filled with Spanish workers and families going about their routines. The menus de dia are written as with all signs in Spanish and there appears to be a lack of interest in trying to attract foreigners and tourists.
Beyond each of the towns which are compact and built according to local needs there are miles and miles of coastline without development until you reach the next small Spanish pueblo. In the fertile fields particularly between Motril and Salobrena you can still find mules and oxen pulling ploughs. There have been a couple of new hotels built in recent years but there is no mass tourism and Saga provides the only package style holidays to the area. The best way to spend some time here is to have a look at our Costa Tropical holiday villas or our Costa Tropical apartment rentals. If you do decide to visit you will find a Spanish experience distinct from the other more talked about Costas of Spain.
The Costa Tropical is Spain and it will not let you forget this.
