Costa Tropical – More Road News

In addition to the recent reports that the new Costa Tropical coastal connection between La Herradura and Almunecar will be open this month there are reports that the other awaited road connection between Motril / Salobrena and the existing motorway to Granada will also be completed very soon (this month – or early next).
For many years the Spanish have been complaining that the Costa Tropical has not had the transportation network that it deserves either to bring tourists here or for movement of goods – the Costa Tropical is a major fruit and vegetable producer and the Motril port is already very active with commercial shipping and expanding.
In the summer this lack of a decent connection with Granada has been very noticeable. The police each weekend have had to lay cones for kilometres and kilometres dividing a two lane road into three which could at times become a little challenging to navigate and was not the most relaxing drive. Despite this there were bottle necks and traffic could be backed up for kilometres along the coast as the Spanish living in Granada and beyond all tried to reach the coast at the same time or leave at the same time to return home, the rtrail of red lights would wind along the coast as far as Almunecar on sunday nights.
About six or eight months ago the first part of a new motorway connection was opened between the coast up to Rules Dam stopping short of the old motorway by just three or four kilometres meaning you had to then join the old road and slowing down your journey. The reason for this was a problem with one of the supports for the bridge across the resevoir being created by the new dam. This now seems to have been solved and the offending stretch of motorway is now being tested thoroughly before it is opened.
