Costa Tropical Beach Food in Madrid

Chiringuito Bueno on La Herradura Beach

For a number of years the Costa Tropical restaurants and bars located on the beaches (and known as “chiringuitos” in Spanish) and which are often found surrounded by sand and which are also present in other coastal areas of Spain have had a cloud hanging over them in the form of a question mark over their future.

Under planning regulations specifically protecting the coast it has been suggested by the Spanish government that these popular locations should not be allowed on the beach. Many of the restaurants that could be affected have been in existence since before this law came into being and contribute a lot of money to the economies of the seaside towns such as Salobrena, Almunecar and La Herradura. There are a total of 52 in Granada province – one for every week of the year and contribute over 500 million euros a year, as well as providing employment for many.

Like many things in Spain the process of finding a solution is slow and the owners of the chiringuitos are now threatening (or offering may be more appropriate) to set up a cabin outside the offices of the Ministry of Environment in Madrid and begin preparing a popular beach food – sardines on a skewer to both put pressure on the minister to start the consultation process (which should have been started in March) quickly and raise awareness of their situation and at the same time possibly gaining a bit of support.

Personally I am not to sure in the logic of how this will put pressure on the Minister – as fresh sardines for lunch are delicious and if I was the Minister I would try to keep them there as long as possible!

Also there seems little logic in removing these chiriguitos – apart from the affect on the economy, looking along the Costa Tropical beaches it is obvious that they are not densely packed together, they are relatively small and do not negatively affect the enjoyment of either visitors or residents. Indeed these traditional restaurants are one of the best locations along the Costa Tropical to enjoy a meal – admittedly the food is often not international and the menus focus mainly on local seafood specialities but particularly for people enjoying their Costa Tropical holidays it provides memories and unique Andalucian culinary experience.
