The Costa Tropical
Costa Tropical Access

Getting to the Costa Tropical for your holidays is about to become just a little bit easier. According to a recent edition of the regional edition of Ideal (Spanish newspaper) the next section of coastal motorway which runs for 9km between La Herradura and Almunecar should be open this month (May). Judging by the flurry of recent activity including painting new road markings where the motorway exits on to the coastal road this could well be right. No dates have been given but if it does indeed happen this month it is likely to be towards the end.
This section of motorway was delayed for atleast two years after a major construction accident caused several fatalities was investigated. The next length of motorway between Almunecar and Motril (running behind Salobrena still needs to be completed and appears to still be someway off as the route may need to be changed due to the mountainous terrain causing concerns.
The new section will make arriving at Almunecar from Malaga airport easier and quicker particularly if you are staying in the areas of Taramay and Velilla, if you are continuing your journey to the east of the Costa Tropical access will also be improved (including Salobreña, Motril Calahonda and Castell del Ferro).
If however you are staying on the western side of Almunecar in Punta de la Mona, Marina del Este or even Cotobro I would probably leave at the La Herradura exit and join the old N 340 coastal road to avoid driving back along the coast through the town.
